A plan plan that is critical to the maintenance process is the counter-based plan. A counter-based maintenance plan involves a reading from an asset that must be entered at a specified frequency, e.g., running hours or temperature. The following four-step process will help you create and maintain a counter-based maintenance plan.

+ Step 1.

Enter transaction IK01, then choose the object for which you want to measure, in this case, we are using a piece of equipment. Enter the equipment number and click Enter.

+ Step 2.

Enter the measurement and description. In this example, we are going to measure the temperature of a dozer. You can also enter the limits within which you want the asset to operate. Click Save once completed.

+ Step 3.

Use transaction IK11 to enter the first reading for your asset.

+ Step 4.

To view a measurement reading, use the equipment master for that reading. This is transaction IE02. Click Enter. In the equipment master, click on measuring points/counters, then on measurement documents. This will display the reading that was just entered for the equipment.

The system can be set up to automatically create a notification in SAP if the reading exceeds a limit, thus helping you perform predictive maintenance. If you would like additional information about measurement points and documents, please contact me. There are several possibilities for the set up and maintenance of these objects that will provide you with better asset control.
