Over the course of 2020 we’ve seen a shift to remote/home-working, an increase in companies offering their products and services digitally, and an acceleration of digital transformation projects. And alongside these adaptations which are rapidly taking place, there are numerous individuals looking for opportunities to benefit from them.

Cyber threats are nothing new, but if the past year has shown us anything, it’s how quickly cyber criminals will seek out new vulnerabilities to exploit, even during a pandemic.

In response to the current global interest in pharmaceutical research and biotechnology, cyber crime has been a focus for that sector. Recent statistics show that more than one in four UK cyber attacks were related to Covid-19, and in October US federal agencies warned of an “imminent and credible threat” to hospital information systems from cyber attacks.

Security needs are becoming more complex. Of course there are services and solutions to help protect an organization and its IT systems, but first, you need to understand where you are vulnerable.

What is GRC and how can it help?

GRC is an acronym for governance, risk and compliance, the area of business encompassing corporate governance, enterprise risk management and compliance with regulations. It is a strategic approach to meeting organizational objectives, ethical management, facilitate informed decision-making, manage and respond to risks, and comply with industry or global/national/local regulations.

SAP’s solutions for GRC address identity, access, fraud, data protection as well as cyber security. It can be a complex area, but the solutions can simplify and even automate GRC. Now more than ever, organizations are looking for their applications to be innovative, create efficiencies and reduce costs. With SAP GRC version 12.0 for example, Winterhawk has developed and deployed several Robotic Process Automation (RPA) scenarios, in particular for SAP Access Control. For example, during a recent project, we implemented several chatbots to streamline the Access Request and Approval workflow.

Are your processes fully optimized or could you getting more out of the SAP technology you have? If you’re re-assessing your Compliance, Control, and automation needs, read our five key reasons to upgrade your SAP GRC system sooner rather than later here.

Know your data

Digital Transformation is about making the most of digital technologies and using your business data to improve your organizational processes – increase efficiencies, optimization, improved Customer Experience (CX) and more. Implicit in this transformation is that the data informing your decisions is current and relevant; it may be possible to delete data with little or no business value (depending on data retention periods).Once you’re confident that the data your organization holds is necessary, meaningful & valuable, you can use that data to inform business decisions with confidence – across CX, productivity etc. Read more about data and digital transformation here.

Digital transformation projects are being driven by a number of global trends. While there is no denying the importance of these projects, they cannot come at the expense of cyber security, fraud prevention and protecting your business data. It is essential to identify potential risks or areas of weakness for remediation, in order to move from a reactive to a preventative and controlled state, to keep your business secure. Find out more about securing your SAP systems from cyber crime here.
